The Car Often Gets Left Until Last
Moving house has a way of scattering everything: keys in one box, paperwork in another, and the old car still sat outside the previous address. By the time you deal with it, the V5C may show one place, you may live somewhere else, and the vehicle may be in a third location.
Scrapping after a house move is not unusual, but it needs clear information. The buyer needs the true collection address and the authority position, not a half-remembered postcode from the logbook.
Check Where The Vehicle Actually Is
Start with the car, not the paperwork. Is it still on the old drive? Has it been moved to a relative's house in Accrington? Is it at a garage after failing repair? Is it on shared parking where the new tenant or landlord is getting impatient?
Give the buyer the exact location, including access notes. If the vehicle is at the old house, confirm who can meet the driver and who has permission to release it from that property. Do not assume a new occupant will be happy to deal with recovery on your behalf.
Photos of the parking position are useful, especially if the old address has tight access or changed parking.
Reconnect The Keys And Documents
House moves are one of the easiest ways to lose car keys and V5C documents. Before declaring them gone, check the obvious places: labelled moving boxes, kitchen drawers, coat pockets, garage hooks, toolboxes, document folders and glovebox wallets.
If the keys are missing, tell the buyer before booking. If the V5C is found but shows the old address, explain that. The V5C helps identify keeper details, but a moved address may need supporting evidence so the handover makes sense.
Old insurance records, council tax letters, utility bills or purchase paperwork can help explain the move without overcomplicating the job.
Be Clear About Tax And SORN
Moving can also blur vehicle status. A car kept off the road on private land may be SORN, but a vehicle left on a road is different. Check what status applies before assuming everything is tidy.
GOV.UK says vehicle tax refunds are based on full remaining months from when DVLA receives the relevant information. It also says DVLA should be told when a vehicle is scrapped, and end-of-use vehicles should use an authorised treatment facility route.
If you receive a scrappage certificate or destruction paperwork, keep it with your move records until the DVLA side is settled.
Make The Collection Low-Drama
Once you have the real address, key status, V5C position and access notes, send them together. Mention if the car is blocked by stored furniture, bins, another vehicle, or anything left behind at the old property.
The goal is to stop the driver arriving with the wrong address, the wrong expectations or no one available to release the vehicle. A house move is messy enough. A short, accurate collection note keeps the scrap job from becoming another loose end in the move. If anything changes after booking, update the buyer before the truck is sent out.
